Low-income homeowners can get help making repairs

Low-income families in Benbrook who are needing to make essential repairs to their homes may be eligible for assistance.

The Tarrant County Homeowner Repair Program is designed to help struggling families get repairs made to their plumbing, roofing, foundation and electrical systems, as well as weatherization improvements.

Eligibility is based on several factors, including the size of the family and their total household income, please see the table below for details. The home also must be valued below $195,000.

Additional homeowner requirements include:
- Cannot be a resident of Arlington, Fort Worth or Grand Prairie;
- Must have owned and lived in the house for at least one year;
- Must hold a clear title to the property;
- Must have paid their real estate taxes;
- Must be current on mortgage loan payments;
- Cannot live in a officially designated flood zone;
- Cannot have a reverse mortgage;
- Must be a single-family home (not a duplex or mobile home);
- Must have dependent children under age 18 living at home, or be receiving Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI), or be at least 62 years old.

Participants also should be planning to stay in the home for the next five years.

The Tarrant County Community Development Department administers the program locally. Once eligibility is confirmed, the County will contract with workers who will come to the house and make the authorized repairs.

The housing rehabilitation program is available to low-income homeowners who live in other Tarrant County cities as well. To learn more about the program and determine your eligibility, please call the Tarrant County Community Development Department, 817-850-7941. 

The program is funded through the Community Development Block Grant and the Home Investment Partnership (HOME). Both are programs of the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD).
